The Battlefield: Then and Now

This early 20th century photograph (use zoom feature for closer view) of the Ox Hill (Chantilly) Battlefield was published in 1907 and shows how little these farm fields had changed in the 45 years after the battle. The photograph was taken from a vantage point just beyond this marker and the southwest corner of the park.

The attack by Union General Isaac Stevens’ division came north across the pasture (toward you). In the foreground, Stevens’ troops were assailed by volleys of Confederate musket fire from the brigades of General A.P. Hill’s division across the fenced field (to your right), and from Hays’ Louisiana brigade (commanded by Colonel Henry Strong, of Ewell’s division, which was commanded by – Brigadier General Alexander Lawton) – in the wood line directly behind you (where Monument Drive is today).
